bainsy's back end! (tray and roll cage)

well here it is folks! the build of my tray and integrated roll cage.

just putting it out there, i have had little experience with this kind of work, this is proof that anything can be achieved if your keen enough. oh and have a mate who can hold the other end of your tape measure (thanks scotty!)

it starts with the removal of the old tray, then cutting 300mm off the back off the chassi

original chassi length:

back section of chassi, to be re-welded back into position after shortening:

chassi shortened, back section welded in:

the next step was to make a way of attaching the main hoop of the rollcage to the chassi. this is what i came up with.

2 of 120x100x12mm steel mounting plates:

plates welded onto chassi, notice HORIZONTAL welds only!! then holes were then tapped to a 12x1.5 thread:

2 of 120x100x5mm plates were then bolted to the mounting plates:

this now gives me something to attach the main hoop of the cage to

next step was to start the cage

firstly was the main hoop:

then tacked the hoop to the attachment plates:
Image

sat the rear bars into position:
Image

the joins are done by cutting 2 30* angles on the end of the pipes which butt together like this:

once everything was in the right position the main hoops were welded and rear bars removed:

next was to start the cross in the main hoop

first off the single piece was tacked into position:

then the 2 single pieces:

this is what it looked like after the main hoop was done:

this is the mount i got machined up for the rear bars to bolt to the chassi it gets welded into the end of the pipe:

mounts were welded in and bolted to chassi, rear bars welded to main hoop:

now for the tray!

im using precast 45* bends to create the angled edges on the tray:

the 45's are then welded:

Ground:

then smoothed off:

heres the rear and 2 sides:
